The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

For years I have been hearing this book being recommended. This being the case it is also a book which I have owned for a long time always promising myself to read and then something else always gets in the way. Finally during Lockdown 2.0 I picked it up and dived into it. Working in the hospitality industry has meant that that most of this year I have been off work. Even with the large amounts of time being spent mindlessly doing nothing I have struggled to really sink into a book finding them taking much longer to read than previously. The Night Circus was the perfect book to help lift this.I found myself wanting to pick it up all the time and once I had started I would struggle to put it down. Even with it being a long read it definitely is a page turner!

A circus has suddenly appeared just outside the town with a sign above saying "Le Cirque Des Rêves" The circus of dreams, there is one catch though. The circus is only open at night and closes at the strike of dawn.

Whilst the guests wonder the circus in amazement they have no idea that they are part of something so much bigger. The circus is a competition for two young magicians. Marco and Celia spend years extending the circus creating a magical place that people follow around the world. Dedicating their lives to see what is added each time.

Marco and Celia have been training their whole lives for a competition they are unsure the rules off. bouncing off one another to create the newest feature of the circus. When they finally learn who each other are they learn how to end the competition.

One of the great parts of this novel is all the characters and the style this book is presented in. You are continuously jumping between perspectives of the circus and different people. Though this sounds like it could get confusing Morgenstern has made each character memorable enough that this doesn't happen. Her writing is extremely descriptive which creates the illusion of the circus floating around you and makes you want to go and visit it yourself. It is that type of book that the whole way through you wish for it all to be based on something real or at least a movie adaption to be realised super quickly. Although you know you will always be devastated by the casting and feel that the movie will never do the book any justice whatsoever!

Though I sit and praise this book the ending did feel a little bit of a cliche, although we all love one sometimes it is nice to be shocked at the end. You can almost picture Morgenstern panicking when trying to create the perfect ending. Part three in itself had points where you may question things. I won't go into detail to not give anything away but you can see where the threads are slightly loose. She does however make sure everything falls into place so you aren't left with too many questions after. This is definitely a book that will stay with you for a long time. Something you can pick up again and again and completely loose yourself into a the magical love story that is the Night Circus.

As you can guess I rate this a solid 5/5
